The Litzmannstadt ghetto (Lodz Ghetto) was established in Baluty and the Old Town area. It was the most impoverished part of the city. Over 180,000 people were crowded into' an area of 4.13 square kilometers.

The Lodz Ghetto was the second-largest ghetto established for Jews in Poland. Located in the city of Łódź, the ghetto was transformed into a major industrial center, providing much needed supplies for Nazi Germany and especially for the German Army. Because of its remarkable productivity, the ghetto managed to survive until August 1944, when the remaining population was transported to Auschwitz.
